    Pedestrian Crossings Are Always Free!

Over 6,000 pedestrians crossed the Peace Bridge in 2012 and took in the amazing views of the Niagara River, Lake Erie, and the City of Buffalo skyline.  The Authority welcomes travelers to walk across the bridge.  Just remember, it can be pretty windy up there, and don't forget to bring your proper border crossing personal identification too.

    Guidelines

1.)  Pedestrians and bicyclists are required to carry the same identification as if you were traveling by automobile. Canada and United States residents should carry a valid passport or in the absence of a passport a driver’s license or other picture identification issued by a federal, state, provincial, county, territory, or municipal authority together with a birth certificate. Travelers other than Canada and United States citizens click here for identification requirements or for admissibility into Canada read the fact sheet called Managing Access to Canada.

2.)  Whether traveling to Canada or to the United States you must use the south (closest to the lake) sidewalk.

Directions and a map on how to cross the Peace Bridge as a pedestrian are attached below for easy reference.  Enjoy the view!

From Canada to the United States

You can access the bridge south sidewalk from Mather Arch Park. After crossing the bridge it is mandatory that you proceed to U.S. Customs (follow the sidewalk) for inspection. At that time you will be asked to present your identification and declare any goods you are bringing into the country. After inspection you will exit the plaza through the turnstile. See the map below.

From the United States to Canada

To get to the south sidewalk you should access the bridge from the Peace Bridge parking lot off Busti Avenue (see map below). At the end of the parking lot you will enter through the turnstile. After crossing the bridge into Canada, at the end of the sidewalk follow the signs and use the tunnel to cross to the north sidewalk – DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS TRAFFIC. Proceed down the sidewalk to the building entrance marked “Pedestrians/Bicycles” for inspection.  At that time you will be asked to present your identification and declare any goods you are bringing into the country.

    Game Day Travel Tips

    gameday

Get to the game ... On time!

The Authority recognizes that sports fans from both sides of the border count on the Peace Bridge to help get them to and from the region's many special events and professional competitions.

    Local_Team_Logos

In order to ensure that your trip goes as smoothly as possible, remember these helpful tips when preparing to cross the border:

1.) Sign-up for NEXUS.  This trusted traveler program makes the border crossing experience much more reliable and efficient.  The Peace Bridge even offers dedicated and exclusive Customs processing booths for NEXUS card holders.  Also, as of February 2010, NEXUS lane hours have been expanded for travelers returning to Canada following Buffalo Sabres home games and special events at HSBC Arena.  This expansion includes operation of a second dedicated NEXUS lane during peak periods.

2.) Enroll in E-ZPass to help significantly expedite your border crossing.

3.) Visit mobile.peacebridge.com on your web-enabled mobile device or call 1-800-715-6722 to obtain wait times for Buffalo Niagara Region international crossings, including the Peace Bridge. These updates are revised hourly.

4.) Prior to arriving at the United States border have proper identification ready to present to Customs officers. Such documents include: Enhanced Driver's licenses, Enhanced Non-Driver Identification, FAST Cards, NEXUS Cards, Permanent Resident Cards, Passports, and United States Passport Cards for travelers 16 years of age and older, and birth certificates, naturalization certificates, or Canadian citizenship cards which are acceptable forms of identification for most children 15 years of age and younger. For more information regarding entering the United States visit www.peacebridge.com/; or for identification requirements for entering Canada visit http://cbsa.gc.ca/security-securite/admiss-eng.html.

5.) If traveling with children who are not part of your immediate family, obtain and carry a parental note of permission regarding cross-border travel. The note should include each child's parental contact information and telephone numbers.

6.) "Clear the junk from your trunk!"  Other than essential luggage, empty your trunk before the trip. Additional belongings in your car may add time to your crossing, as Customs officers may perform a visual inspection of the belongings in your car.

7.) Turn off radios and cell phones when approaching Customs inspection booths and speaking with officers.

8.) Remember to roll down the window, remove sunglasses, and make eye contact with Customs officers.

9.) Be sure to declare all fruits, vegetables, plants and plant products, animals, birds, eggs, meat and meat products, as well as items acquired for personal use.

10.) Avoid horseplay and do not fool around. Customs officers on both sides of the border are law enforcement officials who take their duties very seriously. Approach inspection booths slowly and follow signage instructions.

11.) Be patient. Customs officers are responsible for protecting our nations' borders and public safety.

12.) Do not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

3.)  Bicycles must be walked across the bridge.

An instructional video and directions on how to cross the bridge are included below for reference purposes.

    Bicycle Community Outreach

Beginning in the Summer 2010, an aggressive Bike to the Bridge campaign was launched by the Authority to encourage increased pedestrian and bicyclists crossings at the Peace Bridge.  This effort included a combination of improved public outreach and information distribution, as well as continued promotion of current Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) document identification requirements.

The Bike to the Bridge campaign not only garnered the attention of local bicyle enthusiasts, but also the League of American Bicyclists.

“This initiative is a good first step in educating the public to make the crossing more bicycle friendly,” said GO-Buffalo Director and City of Buffalo Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Board Chairman Justin Booth.

“The League of American Bicyclists is proud to endorse the Bike to the Bridge League_of_American_Bicyclists_Citationevent,” said Bike League Director of Communications Meghan Cahill. “This Peace Bridge event is a great image for our cooperative vision and work to create more bicycle-friendly countries – a North America that recognizes the benefits of bicycling for the environment, personal health, and improving quality of life.”

    Bridge in Light

Learn about the bridge's dramatic lighting system

In 2009, the Peace Bridge underwent an expansive renovation of its lighting capabilities, replacing traditional fixtures with innovative Light Emitting Diode (LED) units.

    Bridge_Photo_Lighted

This new state-of-the-art LED system is controlled by sophisticated computer software that possesses unlimited color options, timings and themes, allowing the Peace Bridge to offer unique and captivating lighting shows at the push of a button. Such lighting options include special color themes for various American and Canadian national holidays, Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres home games, as well as specific dates and celebrations like Halloween.

The system, which operates daily from 9:00 PM until 1:00 AM and from 5:00 AM through 6:00 AM, also requires less physical maintenance and provides improved security lighting for the entire border crossing. When the illumination shows are not in service, the bridge remains lit through low-level intensity beams of white light.

    Lighting Requests

The Authority does consider lighting requests from the general public; however, such requests must meet the following criteria as determined by PBA bridge lighting policies:

1.) Applicants must demonstrate substantial support of the bi-national community surrounding the Peace Bridge and the Buffalo Niagara Region.

2.) Request must support a local or national awareness issue related to community health.

3.) Tributes or memorial requests will only be granted for well-documented local or national figures, or service members.

4.) Individual event requests must be for gatherings that impact the entire Buffalo Niagara region.

5.) Personal, individual birthday, and political requests will not be granted, unless in the instance of humanitarian concern.

6.) All requests must be submitted in writing (electronic submission preferred), along with a contact name, adress, telephone number, and names of supporting community organizations.  To send a bridge lighting request please click here.

Bridge operators have green thumbs too!

Every spring the Authority embarks on its annual landscaping campaign to ensure that the Peace Bridge grounds create a truly welcoming gateway for international travelers and area residents.

    flowers12A_-_Bridge_in_Bloom

Fondly referred to as the "Bridge in Bloom" program, the PBA's beautification efforts include the plantings of several thousand flowers, shrubs, and vegetation, as well as associated mulch, topsoil, and fertilizer spread throughout the bridge structure and surrounding facilities.

The Authority also concentrates these plantings in several specific locations throughout the bridge structure, as well as along Busti Avenue and Front Park in the City of Buffalo, NY, and Queen Street and Veteran's Way near the Mather Arch in the Town of Fort Erie, ON.

    flowers2flowers_3

Following completion of a formal procurement process, The Mill Greenhouses & Garden Center of Port Colborne, ON, and Amos Zittel & Sons Nursery of Eden, NY, were selected to furnish a wide variety of flower and plant species for the Authority's landscaping plan in 2010.  Such species include Alyssum, Begonias, Bidens, Cordyline, Geraniums, King Coleus, Marigolds, Million Belles, Potato Vine, Salvia, Sunflowers, Tapiens, Trailing Verbena, Tulips, Wave Petunias, amongst many others.
